Keighley Mental Health Volunteers Expand Services
Moving Forward was formed as a Men’s Mental Health Support Group five years ago by Alan Wilson of Keighley.
The group has become highly regarded by local mental health practitioners -often described as ‘gold standard’, ‘priceless’ and ‘vital’.
Member’s confess ‘I’d be dead if it wasn’t for you’ and ‘It’s my only family now’.
Moving Forward has expanded it’s activities throughout 2017. The group’s free community based approach with education & peer support is lifting people out of depression.
There is more of the same being prepared by the group’s volunteers. February 2018 is an important month for the Moving Forward group with an increase in the number of services will expand to include women.
Insight based peer groups are the mainstay of Moving Forward. The insight based approach extends to the development of each member’s leadership skills within their mental health community.
In this way Moving Forward provides a pathway from poor mental health to supported wellbeing. Members are trained in the causes and effects of poor mental health, how to identify and cope with triggers, and much more. Members can progress their wellbeing by becoming knowledgable group Facilitators and play a part in better mental health for their community.
Last year, in a joint project, with Keighley Job Centre, Moving Forward began wellbeing appointments with claimants. Both men and women attended the services provided at the Job Centre which included a twelve week course on mental health.
There are also groups in Bingley and Bradford. Currently Moving Forward does not receive any funding for its services and is voluntary.
The group has identified a broader need for it’s services, and much more will be available from February 2018.
Rev Jonathan Pritchard’s All Saint’s Church, Keighley, has generously supported Moving Forward for some time.
From February 2018 Moving Forward will be working in partnership with the NHS “Champions Show the Way” (CSTW) service to provide three new women’s mental health support groups. This partnership has allowed Moving Forward to extend it’s successful approach to women too.
Moving Forward is looking for support and contributions to support its work, from individuals and organisations in Keighley.
