Dr Stephen PorterA Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist from Airedale NHS Foundation Trust has won a Primrose Award for his ‘amazing contribution’ to caring for patients with endometriosis.
Mr Stephen Porter was nominated by a number of his patients for the award which was announced at the Primrose Ball, in Silsden.
The award is given to a health professional who has ‘offered understanding and empathy and who also made a positive impact on a patient’s overall well-being and outcomes’.
The Primrose Ball began in 2015 and is held in March every year to support National Awareness Week for Endometriosis and to fundraise for Endometriosis UK.
Endometriosis is a common condition where tissue that behaves like the lining of the womb (endometrium) is found in other parts of the body.  It can appear in many different places, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, inside the tummy, and in or around the bladder or bowel.  Endometriosis mainly affects girls and women of childbearing age and is a long-term condition that can have a significant impact on a person’s life, but there are treatments that can help.
The ball is organised by Michelle Middleton from Silsden who herself has had endometriosis for 12 years and is cared for at Airedale Hospital.
Michelle said:“It is sometimes hard finding the right support as so much still needs to be done to raise awareness of Endometriosis.
“So it is with immense pleasure that we share this nomination as we have had several people take the time to nominate Mr Porter for his care and understanding that’s delivered to Endometriosis patients – it’s good to praise where praise is due!”
Mr Stephen Porter, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust said:“I am very honoured to have received this award.  As a laparoscopic surgeon I provide advanced surgery for patients with endometriosis and I always endeavour to give a holistic service to patients, so not just surgery or medicine but to be understanding of the impact the operation has on their lives and I try to bear that in mind when I treat them.”
